Who says sloppy joes need meat? This plant-powered version uses TVP (textured vegetable protein) to nail that shredded, saucy texture everyone craves.

The secret is in the sauce: tomato sauce, a splash of red wine vinegar, dark molasses, and a good hit of chili powder create that sweet-smoky-tangy combo that makes a real sloppy joe sing.

Diced bell pepper, onion, celery, and carrot add crunch and freshness to every messy, glorious bite.

Pile it high on toasted buns and hand out the napkins. This one’s a crowd-pleaser whether your family is vegan or just trying to eat a little less meat.

Pro Tips

  • Rehydrate the TVP in boiling water for at least 5 minutes so it absorbs flavor and gets that meaty chew
  • Water-sauteing the veggies keeps this completely oil-free without sacrificing texture
  • Add more hot sauce at the table if you like heat, but start with the quarter teaspoon
  • Leftovers reheat beautifully and actually taste even better the next day as the flavors meld
