40 minThese old-fashioned mincemeat squares are the kind of recipe your grandmother kept tucked in a recipe box, scrawled on an index card with flour-dusted fingerprints.
Brown sugar and warm spices mingle with prepared mincemeat and hearty bran for a bar cookie that’s chewy, fragrant, and deeply satisfying.
A simple confectioners’ sugar glaze drizzled on top adds just enough sweetness to tie it all together.
They bake up quickly in a 9×9 pan and keep beautifully in an airtight container, making them ideal for holiday cookie swaps or afternoon tea.
Pro Tips
- Use quality prepared mincemeat from a jar or make your own. The filling is the star here, so it matters.
- Don’t overbake. Pull them when a knife comes out clean but the center still looks slightly soft. They firm up as they cool.
- Let them cool completely before glazing and cutting. Warm squares crumble, and the glaze will just slide off.
