30 minForget the can. This homemade sloppy joe puts that store-bought stuff to shame with about 10 minutes of extra effort.
Ground beef gets browned with sauteed onion and sweet red pepper, then simmered in a thick tomato paste and ketchup sauce that clings to every bite. No mystery ingredients, no weird aftertaste.
The sauce thickens up as it cooks low and slow for 15 minutes, and then you pile it onto soft hamburger buns. Messy hands mandatory. Napkins recommended.
Kitchen Tips
- Don’t skip the butter for sauteing the veggies. It adds a richness that oil just can’t match here.
- Add the water slowly while stirring so the sauce stays smooth and doesn’t get lumpy.
- For a spicier kick, swap the sweet red pepper for a diced poblano or add a dash of hot sauce at the end.
