35 minThis apple chutney is built for pantry cooking. Dried apple slices and applesauce give you concentrated apple flavor year-round without relying on fresh fruit, which makes it a true winter condiment. Brown rice vinegar adds gentle acidity, and fresh ginger brings a sharp warmth that keeps the sweetness in check.
Raisins, chopped onion, and a dash of hot sauce round out the flavor with a little bit of savory bite. The whole thing comes together in about 15 minutes on the stovetop, or even faster in the microwave.
Pureeing just half a cup of the finished chutney and stirring it back in is a clever technique. It thickens the body and creates a smooth base while the remaining chunks give you texture. You get the best of both a chunky and smooth chutney in one batch.
Pro Tips
- Use unsweetened applesauce. Sweetened versions make the chutney cloying.
- Stir constantly during stovetop cooking. The sugars burn fast once the liquid reduces.
- This chutney thickens as it cools, so pull it from the heat while it still looks slightly loose.
- Serve alongside roast pork, baked brie, or on a cheese board. It pairs well with sharp cheddar.
Variations
- Add dried cranberries instead of raisins for a tarter, more festive version.
- Stir in a teaspoon of curry powder for an Indian-inspired chutney.
- Use apple cider vinegar if brown rice vinegar isn’t available.
