5 hrsA no-bake layered dessert often called Oreo dirt cake, built like a trifle but cut into squares like a bar. Four distinct layers stack up: a buttery Oreo crumb crust, sweetened cream cheese, instant chocolate pudding, and a final cloud of whipped topping with reserved cookie crumbs scattered over the top.
Each layer needs its own hour in the fridge to set before the next goes on. That’s the only patience this recipe asks for, and it’s what gives the finished cake clean, distinct stripes when sliced. Skip the chilling and the layers blur into one chocolate-on-chocolate mess.
Room-temperature cream cheese is the requirement that fails most often. Cold cream cheese will not smooth out, and you’ll end up with white lumps suspended through the second layer. Pull it from the fridge a couple of hours ahead.
The instant pudding (not cook-and-serve) is a deliberate choice. Instant pudding sets cold without cooking, which keeps the cake fully no-bake and gives the chocolate layer a softer, more mousse-like texture than cooked pudding would.
Reserve about a cup of cookie crumbs from the crust step for the topping. The contrast between the dark cookie crumbs and the white Cool Whip is the cake’s signature look.
Pro Tips
- Crush the Oreos in a food processor with the cream filling intact. The cream helps the crumbs stick together with less butter.
- Use a 9×13 dish for proper proportions. A smaller pan piles the layers too high and they tip when sliced.
- Make a day ahead. The cake firms up and slices more cleanly after an overnight rest.
- Use a sharp, hot knife (run under hot water and wiped) for clean square cuts.
Variations
- Use Mint Oreos and add a few drops of peppermint extract to the cream cheese for mint-chocolate.
- Swap the chocolate pudding for vanilla and add a layer of fresh berries between the cream cheese and pudding for a brighter version.
- Top with shaved chocolate or chopped chocolate-covered toffee bits instead of (or alongside) the cookie crumbs.

Are there any oreo cakes that does not include cheese? And not ice-cream ones too.
