Cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, bay leaves, and chunks of fresh lemon and orange get simmered in a quart of water on the stovetop. Within minutes, the whole house smells like a holiday postcard.
Keep it on a low simmer all day, topping off the water as it evaporates. When the party’s over, stash the pot in the fridge and reheat it tomorrow.
It’s the easiest way to make your home smell like Christmas without baking a single cookie.
Kitchen Tips
- Check the water level every 30 minutes or so. If the pot runs dry, the cloves and cinnamon will scorch and the smell goes from festive to burnt in a hurry.
- Use the lowest heat possible. You want a gentle simmer, not a rolling boil.
- Refrigerate and reuse for several days. Add fresh water each time and a squeeze more citrus if the scent fades.
