If you’ve ever tried to figure out what makes Boston Market’s baked beans so good, here’s your answer.

Great northern beans and pork and beans get combined with a generous pour of ketchup, BBQ sauce, softened onions, and sliced boiled ham. Everything goes into a baking dish uncovered so the sauce reduces and thickens as it bubbles away.

Thirty to 35 minutes in the oven with a few stirs, and you’ve got a thick, sticky, sweet-and-smoky pot of beans that tastes like it took all day.

Makes 8 servings and keeps in the fridge for up to a week, which means leftovers that just keep getting better.

Variations

  • Smoky Bacon: Swap the ham for crispy crumbled bacon stirred in at the end.
  • Spicy BBQ: Use a chipotle-style barbecue sauce for a smoky heat that builds as you eat.

Pro Tips

  • Soften the onions in hot water before adding them to the beans. Raw onion in a short bake won’t have time to mellow out.
  • Stir 2 to 3 times during baking so the edges don’t dry out while the center stays soupy.
  • These taste even better reheated the next day. The sauce thickens further and the flavors meld.
