These BBQ beans do something clever: the onion, pepper, and garlic saute in a quarter cup of water instead of oil, making this a genuinely low-fat recipe without sacrificing the base flavor. Once the aromatics are softened, dry mustard, chili powder, cumin, and turmeric go in and toast briefly in the residual heat before the beans and sauce arrive.

The flavor profile here is closer to homemade baked beans than canned BBQ beans. Molasses brings deep, dark sweetness, apple cider vinegar cuts through with brightness, and a dash of hot sauce lifts everything without making it spicy. It’s a layered sauce that tastes like it took longer than 30 minutes.

The recipe note is worth highlighting: these beans work brilliantly on a bun with ketchup and mustard, sloppy-joe style. They’re also a smart picnic dish since they taste good at any temperature.

Kitchen Tips

  • Any cooked bean works here: kidney, pinto, black beans, or a mix; use what you have
  • Stir frequently during the low simmer to prevent the molasses from scorching on the pan bottom
  • The water saute works because the vegetables release their own liquid as they soften; keep the heat moderate
  • Mash a quarter of the beans with a fork before adding to thicken the sauce naturally

Variations

  • Spoon over baked potatoes for a filling weeknight meal
  • Add a teaspoon of smoked paprika for a deeper, smokier BBQ flavor

Directions

Sauté onion, pepper and garlic in ¼ cup water for 5 minutes. Add mustard, chili, cumin, tumeric and stir well to mix. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.

Cook over low heat until heated through, about 15 minutes. HELPFUL HINT: This is great on a bun like sloppy-joe mix, with ketchup and mustard. Good take-along for picnics. Use either hot or cold. Also good over whole grains or as a sandwich spread.
