1 hrsThis old-fashioned “goodie” is basically an apple crisp in bar form, which means you can cut it into squares and eat it with your hands.
The bottom layer is pure fruit and spice, while the oat topping packs in brown sugar, flour, and margarine for that addictive chewy-crunchy texture.
Bake until the apples soften and the topping turns golden, then cut into generous squares.
Kitchen Tips
- Pat the topping down firmly with your hands so it forms a solid crust instead of loose crumbles
- Use tart baking apples like Granny Smith that hold their shape and won’t turn to mush
- Test doneness by poking a knife through; the apples should be tender but not falling apart
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or cold straight from the fridge for breakfast
