No oven, no stove, just a dish and a stack of good things, this 7-layer dip is the party classic that disappears fastest at any gathering. Refried beans anchor the bottom, then cheese, olives, tomatoes, sour cream, guacamole, and salsa pile on top, ready to scoop with tortilla chips.

The order isn’t random. The sturdy beans go down first as a foundation, with the creamy and saucy layers stacked above. Spreading each layer all the way to the edges means every chip you dig in pulls up a bit of everything, top to bottom.

A short chill lets the layers set and the flavors come together. One tip worth following: drain the tomatoes well and add the wettest layers, salsa especially, close to serving, so the dip stays scoopable instead of turning into a watery puddle at the bottom of the bowl.

Kitchen Tips

  • Layer sturdiest to softest: refried beans on the bottom, with the creamy and saucy layers on top.
  • Drain the tomatoes, and even the salsa, well so the dip doesn’t turn watery as it sits.
  • Spread each layer to the edges and use a clear dish so every scoop gets all the layers and the stripes show.

Variations

  • Spread the beans with taco-seasoned ground beef, or add a layer of seasoned cream cheese.
  • Add pickled jalapenos, green onion, or fresh cilantro for color and a little heat.
