Grandma’s mincemeat cookies are a Christmas tradition: spiced dried-fruit filling folded into a tender shortening dough, dropped by the spoonful and baked golden in about 12 minutes.

Grandma’s mincemeat cookies are the kind of holiday baking nobody seems to make anymore, which is exactly why they belong on your December cookie tray. The flavor is straight nostalgia: jarred mincemeat brings warm spices, candied fruit, raisins, and that distinctive boozy-sweet depth into every bite, while the shortening dough bakes up tender with crisp golden edges.

This recipe is also one of the easiest in the holiday rotation. No rolling, no chilling, no fussy cutouts. Cream shortening with sugar, beat in eggs, fold in dry ingredients, then stir mincemeat in last. Drop and bake. The cookies spread quite a bit, so two inches between scoops keeps them from merging into one giant slab on the sheet.

Kitchen Tips

  • Stir mincemeat in last and gently. Overmixing breaks down the fruit pieces and tints the entire dough brown.
  • Use a small cookie scoop for uniform size. Consistent dough balls mean consistent baking.
  • Pull when edges are lightly browned. The centers finish on the hot sheet, so an extra minute in the oven turns them dry.
  • These keep beautifully for a week in a tin with parchment between layers, even better after a day or two when flavors meld.

Variations

  • Use brandy-soaked or rum-soaked mincemeat for a deeper boozy holiday note.
  • Swap shortening for half butter for a richer, slightly chewier cookie.
  • Add chopped walnuts or pecans for crunch alongside the soft fruit chunks.
