One quart of fresh popcorn, melted butter, and your pick from six wildly different seasoning directions. This recipe is really a flavor guide: choose strawberry drink mix for sweet and fruity, instant cappuccino powder for a coffee-shop snack, dry blue cheese dip mix with garlic salt for something savory, curry powder and cumin for an Indian-spiced version, chili seasoning for a Tex-Mex kick, or straight Tabasco in the butter for pure heat.

The method is the same for all six. Melt butter or margarine, stir in your chosen seasoning, and toss it with freshly popped popcorn. The melted butter acts as the carrier, distributing flavor evenly across every kernel.

Freshly popped is key. Stale or pre-bagged popcorn won’t absorb the seasoned butter the same way. Hot popcorn straight from the pot or air popper grabs the butter and lets the seasoning stick.

Pro Tips

  • Toss the popcorn in a large bowl with plenty of room. A crowded bowl means uneven coating and dry kernels at the bottom.
  • Drizzle the butter slowly while tossing with your other hand (or a big spoon). Pouring it all at once creates soggy clumps.
  • For the dry seasonings (blue cheese mix, chili, curry), mix them into the butter before drizzling. This dissolves them evenly.
  • Start with less Tabasco than you think you want. You can always add more, but you can’t take it back.

Variations

  • Mix and match: curry powder with a dash of Tabasco, or chili seasoning with a squeeze of lime.
  • Use nutritional yeast instead of blue cheese mix for a dairy-free “cheesy” popcorn.
  • Try ranch seasoning packet, everything bagel seasoning, or smoked paprika for even more flavor ideas.

Directions

Using 1 quart of freshly made popcorn as a serving size; select one of the listed flavor combinations and follow directions.

In most cases adding the flavor to the melted butter or margarine would be the easiest method.

The strawberry flavored drink mix will give strawberry flavored popcorn.

The instant Cappuccino mix will give Cappuccino flavor.

The dry Blue Cheese and garlic salt will give Blue Cheese flavor.

The combination of curry powder, cumin and garlic salt is good for curry.

Chili seasoning will give a south of the border flavor and finally adding Tabasco sauce to your taste to the melted butter will give that added kick some may prefer.
